Janessa: "Hey I got a Groupon for $1 for $12 at a little restaurant I'd never heard of. Wanna go with me sometime?"
Me: "Of course. Is that even a question?"

-------

So I'm sitting at work all day Thursday (6.25 hours at least) bursting with excitement, eagerly anticipating the dinner I will be getting that is for the first time in weeks, not in the Great Hall.

Janessa and I drive down the mountain blasting King Charles, driving on roads we've never been on before.

The directions told us to turn left at a stoplight. So we did. And we came across a road sign that said "Funeral Ahead." Hmm. Ok. Well, there was no "funeral" ahead, but there was a humongous cemetery that we were suddenly in the midst of. Where the heck was the restaurant? We are out in the back country of Georgia in the middle of a cemetery with no Lou's Barbecue in sight! What did we do wrong?

Time to backtrack. Back through the cemetery, back past the "Funeral Ahead" sign, back past really shabby-looking houses (which I had been relieved weren't the restaurant, though at first I thought they were),  back to the stoplight. We had gone one road too far.

We finally did make it to Lou's Barbecue. It looked pretty sketchy. But it was closed. Five o'clock in the afternoon and it was closed. Why?!

What could we do? We couldn't return to eat in the Great Hall after being so excited to escape it. So we drove through the tiny little town of Rossville. It's a very southern town with old factories and boarded up windows on what used to be furniture and antique stores.

And then we saw it....
....Roy's Grill!!

We knew it was the place for us. Set on a street corner, this little 50's-style place really brought us back in time. The waitresses conversed with the regulars, the old men ate their weekly Roy's Grill burgers, and Janessa and I sat at the stool by the counter taking it all in silently. We ate our Jr. sized burgers with fries and water, listened to the old music, and lived, just for that short half hour, in a world very far away from Covenant College.

I forget sometimes that I'm in the south. Covenant isn't very southern, people here are from all over the place. But just a short ride twenty or thirty minutes away can put you in a very southern, hick town.

We had no idea where we would end up after learning that Lou's was closed. But what we found was someplace really awesome and really special. I don't want to tell many people about it because I don't want Covenant to know about it. It's just so cute and 50's and there's not many places like that anymore.

I guess I know where I'll be next time I need to escape.

....oh, and I'm ready for some more adventure around here.
I don't know what happened with my blog for a while there....but it wasn't letting me post new blogs. But I guess I figured it out now because here I am writing a blog.

Yeah for writing blogs again!!! Sorry for the two month gap.

Tonight was an Ugly Sweater Party

Oh Couch and Cake....a classic Imani tradition. Each Wednesday night starting at 10 is devoted to one person who brings us cake, we sit on our comfy chairs and couches, and they share their life story. It's wonderful. What a great way to learn about people's lives....eat delicious cake while taking a break from homework! But then the best part is we ask them questions for an endless amount of time! Such fun. Here's what the questions looked like tonight for Sarah while we ate her delicious chocolate cake:

-How many countries have you lived in?
-Where would you want to get proposed to on campus?
-If you were a boy, what hall would you live on?
-What would be your Hunger Games survival strategy?
-Favorite kind of tea?
-How many kids do you want?
-Which race would you be if you could pick?
-Would you rather be a fruit fly or a rock?
-Which building would you blow up on campus if you had to blow one up?
-Who would play you in a movie?
-How did you meet your boyfriend?
-What's the color of your underwear you're wearing right now?
-Favorite super hero?
-What's your theme song for life?
-Which Disney princess are you?
-Which Covenant men's sports team is the most attractive?
-First Covenant crush?
-Which Olympic sports would you do for winter and summer?
-Where do you want to go on your honeymoon?
-Do you own any pets?
-What part of Germany did you live in when you were one?
-Which Harry Potter character are you?
-What's your first kiss story?

And the list went on and on. I'm proud to say I asked a good majority of the questions, as I do every week. I just love getting to know people by asking them really strange questions!

Yep....Couch and Cake is the place to be on Wednesday nights for Imani.

I got the rare opportunity today to go up into Carter Tower all by myself for about twenty minutes. My boss was fixing the door at the bottom of the stairs and told me to go up and "Go explore." I walked slowly up the winding staircase, savoring the moments that I had alone in the tower. Names of hundreds and hundreds of former students, employees, visitors of "Hotel above the Clouds"....so many people with their names signed and the dates going as far back as the 1970s and 1980s all the way up until my most recent addition. I wanted to stay up there forever and read what people had written and to imagine what their experiences had been like while in the tower. Most of them probably didn't have the chance of being there by themselves like I did, so I imagine that they were more rushed and didn't care to read the names as much. It was the coolest feeling to be standing up there, completely alone, and yet feeling the presence of hundreds of people who had been there before. It was eerie, but so peaceful and beautiful. I could have stayed for hours.

I spent less than a minute looking at the breathtaking view because I was so captivated by the names and the quotes that people had written down. It's as if they all had just one chance of leaving their mark at Covenant, so they wanted to write something beautiful and memorable or perhaps just simply their name and the date.

The moments I spent up in the Tower today were the most peaceful and enjoyable moments I have had at Covenant in a long time. There will always be a place for Covenant College in my heart, and that Tower, mysterious and old, is my favorite spot on the whole campus.

Especially when I can be there all alone.

I have found myself being more 'grown up' lately when it comes to food. Today in the Great Hall I could have put cream and sugar in my coffee but I realized that I just wanted to drink it black. I forced myself to get used to it like that since I didn't want to buy my own French vanilla for my room. But getting used to something is different than preferring it. I used to only be able to drink coffee when I made it as sweet as possible. And now I think I prefer it black instead.
And this summer I started liking tomatoes for the first time. Not just liking them, but really liking them!! And avocados! They're delicious! And who knew that pineapple was so good? What is going on? I like vegetables (I don't pick around the 'gross' ones), more and more fruits have been added to my list of favorites, and I'm drinking my coffee black!

Does this mean I'm all grown up??

I got my letter from Hannah Brammer and a line in it said: "Today I sat next to this guy in class, Niklas, and he asked me what I was doing and wanted to send some lines, too. I added it for you." So there in my letter was a note from some random law student in Germany! It says,

Hey Megan!
Right now I'm sitting in the very front row of this extremely crowded room. Next to me Hannah is telling me pretty mean jokes. She told me she is your pen pal and she met you in the USA. My name is Niklas by the way. It was quite funny when Hannah told me that she likes almost everyone in the USA. Charles Manson was one of the first people I had to think of. Hannah thinks you are not able to read what I'm writing. I'm pretty sure you are ☺

I was pretty surprised to get this. It isn't about anything in particular and maybe he didn't really think Hannah would send it! The Charles Manson part surprised me since he's a criminal, but I guess this guy is in law school. Anyway, it was one of the highlights of my day to get a letter from someone in Germany I'll never meet! Thank you, stranger, maybe I'll write you a letter back.
